The new athletics track at the Stadio dei Marmi is ready.
One of the most evocative places for sport in Rome, the Italian capital, between 2023 and 2024, underwent important restoration and redevelopment works, in view of the European athletics championships Rome 2024, scheduled for June.
The installation of the prefabricated athletics track began on 7 November. The sport surface chosen is Sportflex Super X 720.
Excavated five meters below the level of the surrounding ground, Stadio dei Marmi is located in the Flaminio district, inside Foro Italico; it is an outdoor amphitheater known for its characteristic marble statues that surround it and which represent different sports.
The Stadium has a capacity of 5,280 seats and since 2014 has been dedicated to Pietro Mennea, an italian athlete who occupies a special place in the annals of our company's personal athletics history because he played a very important role in establishing the very first world record set on Mondo tracks.
The reason for preferring peat-grey to other colors in the range for the production of prefabricated athletics surfaces is due to the decision made by the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage.
The Superintendence opted for the same color used in 1931 when the stadium was built.
At that time there were no artificial materials for athletics tracks, so peat was burned, the combustion of which produced a gray ash which was placed on the ground; the effect is very similar to what we can see today with the new color of the track.
