Basketball in the Netherlands is a sport on the rise, particularly with girls and women. The growing enthusiasm for the game and the passion for basketball is also reflected in the country's continued improving performances in international competitions.
In light of that, the timing could not be better to hold the second FIBA U17 World Championship for Women in Amsterdam. The competition took place from the 17th till the 26th of August 2012 and the Dutch capital and the host nation welcomed the reigning world champions from the USA and 10 teams from all corners of the globe.
The Final saw USA against Spain and the reigning champs United States knocked off Spain 75-62 to complete another undefeated title run (Two years ago, the Americans went undefeated and unopposed as they claimed gold in Toulouse, France. They were joined on the podium by the host nation and by China). Italy, who were weakened without their starting center and small forward, finished sixth after not appearing in France 2010.
Australia finish fifth and Belgium grabbed seventh place ahead of the Netherlands.
All competition have been played on Mondo’s FBS2 - Fast Break System 2 Court.
